Close your eyes a moment and envision this scenario: It’s your wedding and you’ve decided to hire an agency wedding band. As the lead singer trots onto the stage and you realize he looks exactly like your high school gym coach, rocking a pony-tail despite his male pattern baldness and wearing a rayon button-down with an indeterminate floral pattern. At some point in the night this guy gets a few beers in him and really starts to work up a lather as the band busts into Mony Mony. By the time you’re cutting the cake he’s soaked to the bone and stinking like an NYC cabbie. Now he’s making a pass at your borderline-underage cousin and gyrating his crotch in the direction of your wheelchair-bound grandma. Wedding ruined.

When you hire Just the Tip to play your wedding, you don’t have to worry about any of that nonsense. The main reason we’ve been so successful as a wedding band is that we’re not that wedding band. Our show is geared toward a younger crowd, but we mix in plenty of classic rock and Motown to get the old folks up and rocking. We’ll also tailor our set list to fit your preferences and mix in whatever requests you may have. What’s even better – we’re all terrible businessmen which means we charge easily 50% less then agency driven wedding bands.

Well, Todd is gone and there’s nothing that can bring him back. Unless of course he decides to come back. But since we’re not counting on that to happen, we all took some time to do a little soul searching after our last show at Texas Arizona. Chad bought a dog. Fightmaster took up clubbing. Tino broke his wrist. Eric really didn’t do anything.

Now that we got all of that out of the way, we’re hitting the ground running in 2012. We’re working with our new bass player and we’ll have an announcement on him shortly. We’re gearing up for another great wedding season and, hopefully, an elusive Jersey Shore gig this summer. We’ll also be rocking some new spots in the NYC area come the spring, with a revamped setlist and an all-new routine. We can’t wait to see everyone again and keep the JTT ship afloat.

Just the Tip

Well, I’m sure by now you’ve all heard the news – longtime Just the Tip bassist and all-around degenerate Todd Matteson is moving to London at the end of this month. That’s right – the same guy who used to play gigs wearing a Vince Carter sweatband and cowboy boots will now be living in England. I get the feeling he’ll blend right in.

Obviously, this is a sad, sad day for Just the Tip. Todd has always been our musical director of sorts; a rhythmic stalwart who earned our respect being the only guy in the band who could consistently remember the chords to Hurts So Good. Is the middle part D – F# – D? I still have no idea. Todd, are you giving me the stink eye right now?

If there is joy to be had from sadness, it’s that we get one final blowout show with Todd, this Friday night at Texas Arizona in Hoboken. Come on out to say your goodbyes and enjoy the sounds of a truly talented bassist one final time. We haven’t decided where the TIP will go from here, but this will most likely be the last bar gig for the foreseeable future. Hope to see everyone this Friday night!

Complex Magazine recently posted a hilarious rundown of the 25 Douchiest Bars in NYC. For those of you who don’t live in the area, there are swarms of douches inundating Manhattan, and pretty much the only saving grace is the ability to point out some cheesedick at a bar and say “Look at that douche.” Thus, I was thoroughly enjoying this article and the hilarity of other people being labeled douches, until I realized the following:

If you were planning on going to the movies tonight to see Twilight, first of all you are a huge LOSER and secondly you should come to the Brass Rail instead. Now I know someone might try to slingshot a Tampax into my eye socket for saying that. But really, what could be more fun then Eric and Tino rifling through some Coors Lights and while covering Toto and REO Speedwagon? The answer: not much. This is kind of a later show (11pm – 2am) so make sure you are in it for the long haul. Hope to see you tonight!!

Over the summer we had to finally say “goodbye” to our beloved Just the Tip Van due to a litany of mechanical ailments. We sure had some great memories in that thing, like the time it died on me and Chad leaving the shop where we bought it. Or the time it died in the Holland Tunnel and Eric almost got shot by the cops trying to get help. Or the time it died on me in the Holland Tunnel (again) two days before I called the wrecker to come get that PIECE OF SHIT VAN!!!

We actually got $250 cash for it and, considering we only paid $750 to begin with, I think that was a pretty good deal. Seeing as how the van would burn through a new truck battery every 4 months, and a quart of trans fluid a week, we decided it was in the best interest of the planet to put that thing down.

There was a time when I could count on Chad for some fundamental, yet crucially important aspects of JTT business.

• Yelling at anyone/everyone who worked at Desmond’s
• Yelling at me for the entire car ride home after a gig
• Yelling at Eric about his driving
• Yelling at Todd for his crazy social calendar

Now he’s engaged and has a billboard on the LIE. What the HELL happened?!?! I took a moment to reflect but was violently interrupted with the news that Mad Dog has fathered a child. I haven’t stopped vomiting ever since.

Congrats to Chad and Laura

Man, do we have some things to talk about!! It’s been a few months since we’ve updated the website, mostly because I grew tired of making superficial, semi-obvious jokes about my band mates. I thought I was better than all that but, clearly, I am not. None of us are.

So here’s what’s been going on the past few months: We sold the van. Chad got engaged. Todd is moving to London. And in the greatest shock of all, Tino moved out of New Jersey. I’ll give you a moment to reflect on this…
